The Daily Routine of Shri Krishna
**The Daily Routine of Shri Krishna**
Nowadays many storytellers narrate imaginary tales about Shri Krishna. However, what does the **Mahabharata** actually say about him?
In the Mahabharata, the sage **Vaishampayana** describes to **King Janamejaya** the early morning routine of Shri Krishna:
> **ततः शयनमाविश्य प्रसुप्तो मधुसूदनः ।
> याममात्रार्धशेषायां यामिन्यां प्रत्यबुद्ध्यत ।।**
**Translation:**
“After resting on his bed, Lord Krishna (Madhusudana) awoke while half a *prahar* of the night still remained.”
After awakening, he would enter into meditation and contemplate the **eternal and true Supreme God**, offering **praise (stuti), prayer (prarthana), and worship (upasana).**
After taking a bath, he would chant the **Gayatri Mantra** and perform **Agnihotra (Vedic fire ritual)**. Then:
> **ततः सहस्रं विप्राणां चतुर्वेदविदां तथा ।
> गवां सहस्रेणैकैकं वाचयामास माधवः ।।**
> — *Shanti Parva, Chapter 53*
**Translation:**
“After this, Madhava invited a thousand learned Brahmins who were well-versed in the four Vedas, had them recite and expound the Vedic mantras, and presented each of them with a thousand cows as gifts.”
Shri Krishna never neglected **Sandhya (daily Vedic prayers)** and **Agnihotra**, even during journeys, travels, or battles.
### 1. During the Peace Mission to Hastinapur
When he was traveling to **Hastinapur** as a messenger of peace, he rested at the hermitage of sages on the way. According to **Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva, Chapter 83)**, after performing the **morning Sandhya and Vedic Agnihotra**, he listened to the auspicious teachings of the sages.
### 2. Performing Sandhya During Travel
When the sun was setting during the journey, Shri Krishna:
> **अवतीर्य रथात् तूर्णं कृत्वा शौचं यथाविधिः ।
> रथमोचनमादिश्य सन्ध्यामुपविवेश ह ।।**
> — *Udyoga Parva 85.21*
**Translation:**
“He quickly descended from the chariot, performed the required purification rites according to proper procedure, ordered the horses to be unyoked from the chariot, and then sat down to perform the Sandhya prayer.”
### 3. Sandhya at Vidura’s Residence
Shri Krishna once stayed at the residence of the noble **Vidura**. In the morning he performed Sandhya and Agnihotra at the proper time. When **Duryodhana and others** came to meet him:
> **सन्ध्यां तिष्ठन्तमभ्येत्य दाशार्हमपराजितम् ।**
> — *Udyoga Parva, Chapter 94*
**Translation:**
“They approached the unconquerable descendant of the Dasharha clan while he was engaged in the observance of Sandhya worship.”
### 4. Sandhya Even During War
Even on the battlefield, Shri Krishna did not forget the observance of Sandhya:
> **ततः सन्ध्यामुपास्यैव वीरौ वीरावसादने ।
> कथयन्तौ रणे वृत्ते प्रयातौ रथमास्थितौ ।।**
> — *Drona Parva, Chapter 72*
**Translation:**
“After performing Sandhya worship of the Supreme Lord, the two heroes—Krishna and Arjuna—sat on their chariot, discussed the events that had taken place in the battle, and then departed toward their camp.”
Thus, the Mahabharata portrays **Shri Krishna as firmly established in Vedic discipline**, regularly practicing **meditation, Sandhya, Agnihotra, and reverence for Vedic scholars**, even amid travel and the hardships of war.
