God’s Shelter Is the Greatest Shelter
🌷 God’s Shelter Is the Greatest Shelter 🌷
God says:
“Aham indro na parā jigya iddhanaṁ na mṛtyave ’va tasthe kadā cana |
Somam in mā sunvato yācata vasu na me pūravaḥ sakhye riṣāthana ||”
— Ṛgveda 10.48.5
Meaning:
I am the supreme, all-powerful Being, the illuminator of the entire universe like the radiant sun. I am never defeated, nor do I ever meet death. I alone am the creator of the wealth of this world. Know Me as the One who has produced all that exists. O living beings! While striving for prosperity, seek from Me the wealth of knowledge and sciences. And never separate yourselves from My friendship.
In the Kaṭhopaniṣad, Yama also declares God to be the supreme refuge:
“Etad ālambanaṁ śreṣtham etad ālambanaṁ param |
Etad ālambanaṁ jñātvā brahmaloke mahīyate ||”
— Kaṭha 2.17
Meaning:
This is the supreme refuge; this is the highest support. Knowing and taking shelter in this support, a person attains supreme bliss in the realm of Brahman.
Therefore, a human being should place his trust only in God.
What is gained by the false assurances given by people, like consoling a child?
In this regard, Bhartṛhari gives a valuable counsel to those who go seeking help at the doors of wealthy men:
“Nāyaṁ te samayo rahasyam adhunā nidrāti nātho yadi |
Sthitvā drakṣyati kupyati prabhur iti dvāreṣu yeṣāṁ vacaḥ |
Cetastān apahāya yāhi bhavanaṁ devasya viśveśitur
Nirdraurvārika nirdayo ’tyaparuṣaṁ niḥsīma-śarma-pradam ||”
— Vairāgyaśataka 85
Meaning:
When a beggar approaches the door of the wealthy, the gatekeeper says: “This is not the time to meet him; he is in a confidential meeting. The master is sleeping. If he sees you, he will be angry.”
O mind! Leave the doors where such words are heard, and go instead to the house of the Lord, the Master of the universe. There you will find no gatekeeper, no harsh speech. The abode of God bestows boundless peace and welfare.
Maharshi Dayanand also regarded God as the supreme refuge.
When the Maharana of Udaipur once said to him, “Even if you do not worship idols, at least do not criticize idol-worship,” Dayanand replied:
“I can run across your entire kingdom in a single sprint; but even if I run for births after births, I can never go beyond the kingdom of God. Tell me, should I obey your command or God’s command?”
Throughout his life, Rishi Dayanand guided people toward the worship of the formless God and urged them to take refuge in Him alone.
The Yajurveda says:
“Yoge yoge tavastaraṁ vaje vaje havāmahe |
Sakhāya indram ūtaye ||”
— Yajurveda 11.14
Meaning:
Those who, united in friendship and mutual protection, accept a powerful and righteous leader, can progress joyfully, free from all obstacles.
At the beginning of every task and every battle, we lovingly invoke the mighty Indra—God—for our protection, so that all our endeavors may be completed without hindrance.
Within our own minds, a constant battle of devas and asuras—virtues and vices—continues. The sattvic, divine qualities seek victory, while the tamasic, demonic tendencies also seek dominance.
May the tamasic qualities be defeated, and may the divine virtues prevail.
By winning this internal war, we become happy in this world and the next.
For this, we must remain under the shelter of God, who protects us in the inner battle of life and leads us on the path of divinity.
