What is Dharma?

 ## 🚩 **What is Dharma?** 🚩

**Dharma is that which is capable of promoting the welfare of all human beings—not of any one individual or group.**

Dharma is that which opens the path for the all-round development of life—intellectual, spiritual, physical, social, and national upliftment. That which inspires equality, unity, mutual love, harmony, goodwill, and impartial vision; that which makes one conscious of duty—Such Dharma, when practiced, elevates a person both in this world and the next.

What a lofty and expansive philosophical vision of Dharma this is!

**“Yato ’bhyudaya-niḥśreyasa-siddhiḥ sa dharmaḥ.”**

*That which leads to material and spiritual upliftment—that alone is Dharma.*

By “spiritual upliftment” is meant the evolution of the soul, the attainment of higher moral and metaphysical excellence.

Thus, material advancement alone is not sufficient; spiritual development is even more essential. Material uplift is for the body, and spiritual uplift is for the soul. Both forms of progress are important for human life.

### **The Means of Dharma**

**“Ahiṁsā satyam asteyaṁ śaucaṁ indriya-nigrahaḥ |

Dānaṁ damo dayā kṣāntiḥ sarveṣāṁ dharma-sādhanam ||”**

Non-violence, truth, non-stealing, purity, control of the senses, charity, discipline of the inner being, compassion, and patience—

These are the means of Dharma for all human beings.

### **Dharma is Not Dependent on One’s Ashrama**

**“Na āśramaḥ kāraṇaṁ dharme kriyamāṇe bhaved dhi saḥ |

Ato yad ātmano ’pathyam pareṣāṁ na tad ācaret ||”**

*(Yājñavalkya Smriti 7, 8, 1, 22; Prayog 65)*

No specific *āshrama* (stage of life) is necessary for the practice of Dharma; Dharma is practiced simply by performing righteous actions. Therefore, whatever is unpleasant or unacceptable to oneself should not be done to others.

### **Guidance for Right Conduct**

👏 A person should always remember:

That which is undertaken daily by wise, impartial, desireless scholars,

That which the soul recognizes as righteous—

That alone is worthy of being accepted as Dharma.

👏 The entire Veda, Smritis, texts authored by Rishis,

The conduct of noble persons, And those actions in which one’s soul remains satisfied—free from fear, shame, and doubt—

These should be practiced.

One who follows the Dharma prescribed by the Vedas and by Smritis that do not contradict the Vedas gains **fame in this world and supreme happiness in the next**.

👏 Only the person who is free from greed and sensual cravings can truly understand Dharma.

Those who seek to know Dharma must accept the **Veda as the supreme authority**.

### **Essence of Sanatana Dharma**

👏 **Speak the truth, speak what is pleasant.

Do not speak unpleasant truth, and do not speak pleasant falsehood.

This is Sanatana Dharma.**

👏 Those who conduct themselves with virtue, make constant effort, and perform *japa* and *havan* daily—such people do not encounter suffering.

👏 Through the practice of Dharma a person obtains long life, noble progeny, and inexhaustible wealth.

The practice of Dharma destroys the signs of adharma.

👏 A wicked man is condemned everywhere, suffers constantly, and becomes short-lived due to disease.

👏 A person who is unrighteous, who accumulates wealth through sinful means, and who is always engaged in violence and enmity—

Such a person never attains happiness in this world or the next.

👏 Even if suffering comes while practicing Dharma, one must not turn toward adharma.

The sinful may appear happy for a short time, but soon they face suffering.

👏 Just as the reward of serving a cow (milk) does not come instantly,

Similarly, the fruits of sinful actions also take time to manifest.

Gradually, adharma cuts the roots of a person’s happiness.

👏 A man of adharma, by breaking the limits of Dharma, may initially rise—

gaining wealth, luxury, food, clothing, ornaments, status, and even defeating enemies through injustice—

But like a tree cut at the root, he soon perishes.

👏 Just as termites gradually build a huge mound,

A person should slowly accumulate Dharma—without harming any creature—so that it becomes helpful in the next life.

👏 In the next world neither mother, father, son, wife, nor relatives can help.

**Only Dharma becomes one’s true companion.**

### **Eightfold Path of Dharma** *(Vidura Neeti)*

Yajna, study of scriptures, charity, austerity, truth, patience, forgiveness, and lack of greed—

These eight form the path of Dharma.

The first four may be performed for show,

But the last four exist only in great souls.

### **Who Cannot Understand Dharma?**

*(Vidura Neeti 1.101–102)*

“O Dhritarashtra, ten types of persons do not understand Dharma:

the intoxicated, the careless, the insane, the exhausted, the angry, the hungry, the hasty, the greedy, the fearful, and the lustful.

Therefore, a wise man must avoid being attached to such persons.”

### **Maharaja Bhoja says:**

**“Even a strong man is weak, even a wealthy man is poor,

even a learned man is foolish—if he turns away from Dharma.”**
