 **Some Fundamental Teachings of the Vedas**


1. **O Lord! May we follow the truth and never go near falsehood.** (Ṛgveda 8.62.12)


2. **Noble thinking, noble action, and noble speech should always have a place in human life.** (Ṛgveda 10.191.1–4)


3. **The *sabha* (assembly) and *samiti* (council) are like the daughters of the king. When seated in them, one should give only true and proper counsel.** (Atharvaveda 7.12.1)


4. **The illuminating rays of *ṛta* (cosmic truth) are perfect. Knowledge of *ṛta* protects one from evil deeds.** (Ṛgveda 4.23.8)


5. **The senses cannot attain the Supreme God.** (Yajurveda 40.4)


6. **The Protector of the people, God, has explained the nature of truth and falsehood, instructing us to have faith in truth and to reject falsehood.** (Yajurveda 19.77)


7. **Through knowledge and righteous action, a person becomes a devotee of God, and through these alone remains distant from vices.** (Ṛgveda 5.45.11)


8. **Crooked or inverted action is called sin.** (Ṛgveda 1.189.1)


9. **May our mind always be filled with noble thoughts.** (Yajurveda 34.1)


10. **A person without austerity is of immature intellect; thus, he cannot attain that Supreme God.** (Ṛgveda 9.83.1)


11. **This body will ultimately turn to ashes. O soul! Remember yourself, your actions, and Om.** (Yajurveda 40.15)


12. **Truth, vastness, *ṛta*, might, austerity, consecration, Brahma, and yajña sustain the earth.**


13. **Become true human beings and produce noble offspring.** (Ṛgveda 10.114.10)


14. **One who has too many children falls into suffering.** (Ṛgveda 1.164.32)


15. **Self-destructive persons attain dark and miserable worlds.** (Yajurveda 40.3)


16. **May all directions be friendly toward us.** (Atharvaveda 19.5.6)


17. **Through brahmacharya (celibacy) and austerity, the wise cross beyond death.**


18. **We should always act according to knowledge and never oppose it.** (Atharvaveda 1.9.4)


19. **May we hear only auspicious things with our ears, see only good with our eyes, praise the Divine with strong, healthy bodies, and may our entire life be dedicated to noble deeds.** (Yajurveda 25.21)


20. **May the noble deeds performed by the virtuous always be beneficial to us.** (Ṛgveda 7.95.4)
